How to Throw a Themed Party as an Adult

Remember when you were a kid and your birthday parties would always have cool themes like pirates, jungle animals or your favourite Disney movie for that week? Party themes for adults can be just as creative and hilarious, and are actually quite easy to put together.

Here are a few of our favourite tips, themes and party games for adults. Because why should kids have all the fun?

Themed Party Ideas

Surprise, the most important part of a themed party is the theme itself. Adults have a much broader scope of themes to choose from than kids, both because there are many more that are age appropriate, and because we’ve experienced so many more movies, books, and TV series over our lives.

Here are our top 5 themes for parties that you’re sure to love.

Star Wars

The Star Wars films have such a long history and timeless appeal that you don’t even need the excuse of a new movie to throw a Star Wars party.

Doctor Who

This may be the only party theme that is made even better by two people dressing as the same character.

James Bond

Whether you’re a massive Bond fan or just want to look good in a sharp tux or killer dress, there’s something for everyone at a James Bond party.

Harry Potter

It’s almost impossible to find someone today who hasn’t read the books or seen the films, and you’d be surprised how many of your friends already own their own Potter costumes!

Superheroes

There are so many options for a superhero party. Guests can come dressed as their favourite Marvel or DC heroes, or even make up their own.

Party Games

Once you have your theme, it’s time to decide on some games. There are plenty of party games for adults to choose from, but make sure you pick ones that match your theme.

For a Bond party, release your inner spy with a “laser” tripwire obstacle course, easily made by arranging threads of red wool across rooms. Put a new spin on an old classic with a Doctor Who or Harry Potter murder mystery party (yes, they exist!).

Food and Drinks

Some themes lend themselves better to party food than others. Harry Potter is stacked with chocolate frogs, every flavour jelly beans, pumpkin pasties and a whole lot more you can have fun recreating. James Bond, on the other hand, has little more than vodka martinis, so you’ll need to think outside the box. Try a cake shaped like a Walther PPK, for example.

Another option is to plan your party around food and drink to begin with. A high tea is a delicious indulgence that will make every guest feel full and happy.

Added fun

When coming up with themed party ideas, remember the little details. The right background music can really set the mood, and playing the relevant movies in the background can have a similar effect. Experiment with themed temporary tattoos, party bags, decorations and more to really make it a night to remember.
