How to Choose the Right Costume

History and pop culture are stacked with great characters to dress as for Halloween, Supanova or a house party. But with so many options, it can be hard to know how to choose a costume that’s right for you.

To help you find both the right look and the right fit, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you come up with costume ideas that will really work.

Our Step-By-Step Guide to Choosing a Party or Halloween Costume

Start planning early

Choosing and finding the perfect costume takes time and effort. Running around sold-out costume shops the day before your event is stressful and often disappointing.

Start your planning at least a month out from when you need your costume, especially if you’re buying online. This will allow time to figure out exactly what you want, find a good price and make sure everything fits like it should.

Set your budget

Budgeting is never exciting, but you need to know how much you have to spend before you set your heart on a costume. If you’re buying rather than renting, consider how many times you’re likely to reuse this costume over the next few years (if at all). Could the pieces of this costume be repurposed for another one?

You can trim costs by making accessories yourself (e.g. a painted wood/cardboard Captain America shield), and keeping an eye out for sales closer to the event date.

Find your alter ego

Everyone has a superhero or character they relate to, someone you see as an alternate or amplified version of yourself. It’s easy to feel relaxed and confident in these costumes, because you’re just being yourself in a shinier package.

Alternatively, villains and dark heroes provide great costume inspiration for expressing your hidden side, doing the things you might normally be too self-conscious to try.

Pick what fits

The best costumes both look and feel great to wear. You want to be comfortable and having fun, not constantly hitching up your Bat belt or trying to stop your tights from riding up.

To find a flattering, form-fitting outfit, check out characters with a similar height and build to you. And wherever possible, try on a costume before you buy it.
