The Best Group Costumes

Group costumes are the best way to have fun at a dress-up party, and help your shyer friends feel less self-conscious than if they picked a costume alone.

Here are the best group costumes we’ve found for you and your friends, family and workmates.

TV Show Inspiration

TV is packed with cool group costume ideas ripe for the picking. Try these on for size:

Rugrats

Let the inner child free as the greatest little escape artists of your childhood. Rock a nappy and bald cap as Tommy, Phil and Lil, and get the biggest orange wig you can for Chucky.

Orange is the New Black

Look effortlessly fabulous with some prison scrubs and maybe a security guard. Don’t forget everyone’s favourite cook thrown in for good measure.

Original Charlie’s Angels

Go ‘70s chic in flairs, blouses and big hair, while the Bosleys and Charlies of your group can suit up and pretend they’re in charge.

Movie Squads

If you’re feeling a little Clueless about group costumes, here are some great movies to draw inspiration from.

Rocky Horror

It’s just not a party until someone sings Sweet Transvestite. Channel Dr Frankenfurter with a surgical smock and pearl necklace, or go full glam as Columbia with a sparkling top hat and bow tie.

Clueless

Throwback to the ‘90s with all the big hats, short skirts and plaid you can handle. Really commit to the costume with a giant phone, tiny purse and armfuls of shopping bags.

Mean Girls

Release your inner Regina George by putting together your hottest ensemble. Tip: use pink!

Games IRL

More of a couch potato than party animal? Bring your love of games with you!

Tetris

Be the coveted line piece everyone needs to complete their party! Or gum up the works by having everyone come as squiggly and square pieces. All it takes is some cardboard boxes, tape and paint.

Cards Against Humanity

Dress as your favourite (or most depraved) cards, made from cardboard and black and white paint. Bonus points if you can make a haiku!

Monopoly

Go the extra mile to ruin friendships by dressing as Monopoly playing pieces like the racecar, iron and top hat. Get creative with cut foam, cardboard and thrift store props to bring your vision together.

If You Want Something Even More Different

Sometimes you want to step outside of the expected and wear something completely different.

Denizens of the Sky

Blaze into the party as a bright yellow sun, get fluffy as a cotton wool cloud, wear something dark and sparkly for stars, or pattern a crescent moon onto a navy top. Alternatively, dress everyone as ducks and navigate the party in a V formation.

All the Johnny Depps

You’ll need a pirate’s hat, a cutlass and plenty of swagger as Captain Jack Sparrow; a top hat, cane and maroon suit as Willy Wonka; and some scissors, tape and black clothes as Edward Scissorhands.

Your Greatest Fear

If you’re scared of aging, dress like a grandpa. If you hate flying, go as a cardboard plane. Still a bit scared of the dark? Dress in all black. Get creative with it!
